The Mitsubishi Pajero 2027 Returns with a New Generation: True Four-Wheel Drive, a Diesel Engine, and Advanced Technology

Mitsubishi has officially revealed the new generation of the Pajero 2027, bringing back one of its most famous off-road vehicles after an absence of several years, with a Ladder Frame chassis, an advanced four-wheel drive system, a 2.4-liter diesel engine, alongside a cabin that seats 7 passengers and new premium technology features.

Mitsubishi Motors officially unveiled the new Mitsubishi Pajero at a global debut held in Tokyo, Japan on September 2, 2026, bringing back the Pajero as a new-generation flagship SUV representing the future of the Japanese brand.

The new Pajero combines the off-road driving capabilities that made previous generations famous with a higher level of comfort, luxury, and technology, while retaining its strong design identity.

The Return of the Mitsubishi Pajero After an Absence

The Pajero returns to markets after the previous generation was discontinued in overseas markets in 2021, with the new car built on a long history dating back to 1982.

Across four previous generations, Pajero production exceeded 3.29 million units, with a presence in more than 170 countries and regions worldwide.

The Pajero name has also been tied to a strong motorsport history, particularly in the Dakar Rally, where the car secured 12 wins, including seven consecutive victories, helping cement its reputation as one of the most prominent off-road vehicles.

Pajero 2027 Design: An Identity Blending Past and Future

Mitsubishi based the new Pajero's design on the "Grand Charisma" concept, retaining the boxy lines and tall stance that defined previous Pajero generations.

The car features a vertical front end and strong horizontal lines, with prominent fender flares giving it a more powerful appearance, in addition to T-shaped headlights.

The car also revives certain details inspired by Pajero's history, including a rear C-pillar design inspired by the protective bar on the first generation, alongside a hexagonal rear design inspired by the spare tire mount that previous generations were known for.

Mitsubishi offers a front grille in two different designs, one with horizontal lines and the other with a hexagonal mesh pattern.

A Luxurious 7-Seat Cabin

Inside, the Pajero 2027 gets a more advanced cabin compared to previous generations, with a horizontal dashboard design inspired by the first generation.

The car comes with three rows of seats accommodating 7 passengers, with clear attention paid to third-row passenger comfort as well.

The second row gets the ability to slide seats by 150mm, in addition to a mechanism that makes entry and exit to the third row easier.

The front seats and second row are also available with ventilation, alongside a three-zone automatic climate control system with independent temperatures for the cabin.

Two 14.3-Inch Screens

Among the cabin's standout elements is the integrated main 14.3-inch display, alongside a digital instrument cluster of similar size on certain trims, with the two screens forming a connected, modern design in front of the driver.

Mitsubishi has also reintroduced the famous triple-gauge cluster from the classic Pajero in a modern digital form called "Multi-Meter," where the driver can display information such as altitude, compass heading, temperature, and the vehicle's tilt angles.

2.4-Liter Diesel Engine and 8-Speed Automatic Transmission

Mechanically, the Pajero 2027 is powered by a clean 2.4-liter diesel engine equipped with a variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT).

The engine generates a maximum torque of 480 Nm, giving the car strong acceleration capability and the power to handle difficult terrain.

The engine is paired with a new 8-speed automatic transmission with a Sport mode, aimed at combining responsiveness on paved roads with the ability to handle off-road trails.

Ladder Frame Chassis: A Pajero Built for Off-Road Terrain

One of the new Pajero's key strengths is its high-rigidity Ladder Frame chassis, using high-strength steel to reduce weight and increase structural rigidity.

The car uses an independent front Double Wishbone suspension, with a solid rear axle featuring a Five-Link setup, aiming to achieve a balance between comfort on paved roads and the ability to handle rough terrain.

Mitsubishi states that the car was developed to achieve what it calls "off-road comfort," by reducing vibrations and improving stability and comfort during long trips.

Super Select 4WD-II Four-Wheel Drive System

The new Pajero gets the Super Select 4WD-II (SS4-II) system, which lets the driver choose between four main drive modes:

• 2H: Rear-wheel drive.
• 4H: Four-wheel drive.
• 4HLc: Four-wheel drive with center differential lock.
• 4LLc: Four-wheel drive with center differential lock and low-range gearing.

The car also gets the Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system, which works to improve power distribution, stability, and vehicle control depending on driving conditions.

7 Driving Modes

To make driving easier across various terrain types, the new Pajero offers seven driving modes:

Normal – Eco – Gravel – Snow – Mud – Sand – Rock

This allows the driver to select the appropriate mode based on the nature of the road, whether driving in the city or on sandy, muddy, or rocky roads.

Advanced Safety Systems

Mitsubishi didn't stop at developing the Pajero's off-road capabilities — it also equipped it with a wide range of driver assistance systems.

Features include:

• Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) warning and braking system.
• Pedestrian, cyclist, and motorcyclist detection.
• Intersection assistance system.
• Predictive forward collision warning.
• Pedal misapplication assistance system.
• Emergency Lane-keeping Assist (ELA).
• Front Cross-Traffic Alert (FCTA) at intersections.
• MI-PILOT highway driving assistance system.
• Adaptive cruise control.
• Lane-keeping assist.

The car also gets 8 airbags, including a front center airbag designed to reduce the likelihood of front passengers colliding with each other during accidents.

12-Speaker Yamaha Sound System

For audio enthusiasts, the new Pajero is available with the Dynamic Sound Yamaha Ultimate system, developed in partnership between Mitsubishi and Yamaha.

The system consists of 12 speakers and amplifiers, with noise-compensation technology that adjusts sound based on the car's speed and driving conditions.

When Will the Mitsubishi Pajero 2027 Arrive in Markets?

Production of the new Pajero will begin in Thailand, with the Thai market among the first to receive the car, followed by Japan and Australia during fiscal year 2026.

Starting in fiscal year 2027, Mitsubishi plans to expand the Pajero's rollout to around 100 countries worldwide, including markets in ASEAN nations, Latin America, and the Middle East.

As of now, Mitsubishi has not announced, through official global sources, the final price of the Pajero 2027 or a specific arrival date for Arab markets.

With the new generation, Mitsubishi is trying to preserve what historically defined the Pajero most: off-road capability and reliability, while adding a higher level of comfort, luxury, and technology.

Between the Ladder Frame chassis, the Super Select 4WD-II system, S-AWC technology, the 2.4-liter diesel engine, and the seven-seat cabin, the new Pajero appears designed to compete in the large off-road SUV segment, while preserving the character that made the name famous since the 1980s.
